PASTA AT CAPE BRETON
My first leftover pasta lunch was eaten in Nova Scotia, oddly enough. Having finished graduate school in Boston, I headed north to do some hiking and exploring in Maine for the summer. The farther north I traveled, the more I heard about Nova Scotia. I decided to take a look.
It was easy enough to hitchhike in Maine, but the rides grew scarce in Newfoundland. I was about to turn back, when I met up with Dino, a graduate student from NYU, and his girlfriend, Sarah, as they were getting gas at a rest stop. They graciously took me with them to Cape Breton, where they had rented a fishing cabin on a steep hillside in a coastal town called Meat Cove. We could see icebergs and whales from the front deck, and catch lobster by hand, and I had my first and only wild strawberry pie, for there were enough wild strawberries.
Dino’s mom came up from Brooklyn to visit. She had no more interest in Nova Scotia than in cedar stumps, but she loved Dino. During the visit, she made an enormous pot of spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner (no one said “Bolognese”; it was 1968). The next day, Dino and I were trudging up from the beach to the cabin high above, a steep hike, and he laughed and said, “Leftover pasta for lunch!” He heated a pan on the electric stove, added some olive oil, then the pasta, then a bit of warmed water, and stirred until it was just heated through. I had never seen spaghetti in a frying pan. And I never forgot that plate of pasta.
